Little is known about them, save that they were an enemy of the Evanuris. There was a second pantheon of alleged gods called "The Forgotten Ones" who also fell prey to the Dread Wolf's treachery. It's also important to consider that it's not just the Evanuris locked away behind the veil. It's easy to foresee them inflicting their rage upon the world just as they murdered Mythal, one of their own, simply for disagreeing with their destructive lust for power. Solas confessed that he locked them away because, had he not done so, they would have destroyed the world. Considering they were tricked by one of their own, it's not difficult to imagine the centuries of wrath they've been sitting on. Secondly, those powerful, ancient beings the elves believed were gods are also being constrained by the veil. That alone could be catastrophic for Thedas, as thousands upon thousands of spirits join mortals on the physical plane. Not all spirits are demons, but they can become corrupted by exposure to mortal ideals and emotions. While mages may still be a gateway for spirits to crossover into the mortal realm, the majority of spirits don't currently have a straightforward avenue into Thedas. Almost entirely reliant on magic, Elvhenan collapsed, and the elves Solas sought to protect were thrust into difficulties far greater than he imagined.įirst, the veil is holding both demons and spirits in check and preventing them (for the most part) from tormenting and corrupting mortals. Sealing these powerful beings away from the mortal world seemed like a good idea at the time, but Solas didn't factor the impact the loss of their power would have on Elvhenan. An ancient elf named Solas, called Fen'Harel or Dread Wolf by his enemies, created the veil in an effort to protect the elves of Elvhenan from the power-hungry Evanuris they believed were their creator gods. However, those who dream, especially mages, can pass through the veil and travel the Fade, though most aren't even aware they are doing so.įor thousands of years, the Chantry believed the Veil was created by the Maker, but the truth was far more complicated. It has been described as a vibration of energy, which the Inquisitor was tasked by Solas to measure during the Inquisition, designed to keep mortals from physically crossing into the Fade and spirits from crossing into Thedas. The veil is not an actual, physical barrier that one can touch or see under normal circumstances, but it is a very real barrier between Thedas and the Fade.
